Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does this app do?

This app exists to perform a single task - listen for play state changes from Spotify and forward them to macOS notification center.

In simpler terms, get a notification whenever a new song starts playing on Spotify, complete with track information and album artwork.
  • Why does this app exist?

Spotify users have been asking for desktop notification support on macOS since 2012.

But despite the simplicity of the task at hand (15-20 lines max to send a notification to macOS Notification Center)... Spotify has yet to implement support for this much-requested feature. 😭
  • Where can I find the source code?

The source can be found on the primary host - doom.fm. It is also mirrored to GitHub.
  • Where can I file a bug or get help?

If you encounter a bug and would like to file an issue, please open a new one on the GitHub repository.
  • Which platforms are supported?

Spotify Notifications is only distributed for macOS 10.12+. You will need Spotify already installed (it is not bundled with or managed by Spotify Notifications).
  • Why does this app try to control Spotify?

When running the app for the first time, macOS may prompt you to allow Spotify Notifications to control Spotify.

In order for Spotify Notifications to request state updates from Spotify (so that it can forward them to macOS Notification Center), you'll need to allow Spotify Notifications to control Spotify.
  • Does this app perform any user tracking?

Nope, none at all! We don't phone home, track usage, etc. Absolutely nada.
  • Does this app require Internet access?

Some, to a certain extent β€” album artwork and the Last.fm integration require Internet access.
